Fado music is a form of Portuguese singing that is often associated with pubs, cafés and restaurants. This music genre has much earlier origins but is generally placed as being originated in the 1820’s in Portugal. Fado is known for how expressive in nature it is, as well as being profoundly melancholic. Generally in fado music, the singer will sing about the hard realities of the daily life, balancing both resignation and hopefulness that a resolution to its torments can still occur. It can be described by using the Portuguese word “saudade”, which means “longing” and stands for a feeling of loss.

This evening, we bring you an extraordinary Fado singer, Ramana Vieira. Ramana has a deep, personal relationship to Fado music. Born in San Leandro, CA to Portuguese immigrants, she was raised on a diet of traditional Fado music that has made its way into the very core of her being. Classically trained at the prestigious American Conservatory Theatre with Faith Winthrop, she rediscovered her passion for Fado on a trip to Portugal and immersed herself in studying this art form. With inspiration from Amália Rodrigues to Shakira and Dulce Pontes, Vieira and her ensemble play both classics and their own original music.

She will be accompanied by excellent local musicians Duane Padilla on violin, Sonny Silva on guitar, and Dean Taba on bass.

Tower of Power

For over 50 years, Tower of Power has delivered the best in Rhythm and Blues music. Their first record, East Bay Grease, helped to define the East Bay sound, and did well enough to warrant a recording contract with Warner Brothers. Bump City, their 1972 debut for the label, was a hit on both the Billboard 200 and the chart’s R&B Albums chart and netted them the hits “You’re Still A Young Man” and “Down To The Nightclub.” The decade of the 1970s were a boom period for the group, who hit with radio classics like “So Very Hard To Go” and “What Is Hip?” and the band has continued to tour and record over the years with their latest project Hipper Than Hip being a live flash back to their 1974 tour. Castillo says their love of the stage is the same today as it was back in 1968.

TOP consistently plays over 200 nights a year, touring the world. Bringing their music to Europe and Japan each year, crisscrossing the US with an occasional trip to Australia and New Zealand, taking the TOP message is their life's work.

When asked to describe the band's music, the group members give a variety of responses. Says Emilio, “What Tower plays is Oakland soul music.” Former Tower saxophonist Lenny Pickett, current musical director for the Saturday Night Live band, says “TOP is the world's best rhythm and blues band.” TOP’s horn-driven, in- your-face sound is all its own.
