Danny Kaleikini, a staple in Hawaiian music and the “Ambassador of Aloha,” has been entertaining audiences from around the world for over 50 years and is most commonly known for his long-standing residency at the Kahala Hilton, a stint that ran for 30 years. He was the opening act for Paul Anka at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas and has performed alongside Dolly Parton, Sammy Davis Jr., Don Ho, Hilo Hattie, and Jimmy Borges.
Nicholas, a classically trained musician and producer at Lana Lane Studios, played clarinet in his early years that developed into a lifelong love of the saxophone and piano. He is the Director of the POW! WOW! School of Music, a free two-week-long music intensive program for local youth. Nicholas also performs with internationally acclaimed emcee and activist Shing02 and recently finished touring China, Japan, New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
In 2015, the duo released their first album together entitled Aloooha. The album was nominated for EP of the Year at the 2016 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The duo released their second album, entitled Mahaaalo, December of 2016, marking the first time that Danny and Nicholas will be releasing original music.
When asked about collaborating with his grandson, Danny stated, “Aloha kekahi i kekahi, love one another. Aloha ke akua, God is love. To work with my grandson, and to share with him what I know, and to learn from him from what he knows, is a special bond. To come together as one ‘ohana, the end result is simply, aloha.”
The duo produced and arranged the EP alongside Lindley P. Cannon to create a modern take on the old sounds of Hawai‘i Nei. The jazz and blues-influenced recordings showcase Danny’s legendary vocals backed by the saxophone, piano, acoustic guitar, upright bass, and steel guitar. Other musicians featured on the EP includes Alika Lyman, Jeff Au Hoy, Wil Tafolo, Dae Han, and Lanihuli Lee.
