AWB are widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' the band's strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi- grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took the influences of their R&B; heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own 'authentic' sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere. While a good number of cuts - 'Cut The Cake' and 'Let's Go Round Again'- became hit singles, many other album tracks, like 'Schoolboy Crush' and 'Stop The Rain' became much sampled grooves. Many more tunes, such as 'Cloudy', and 'A Love Of Your Own'- amongst many others- stand alongside some of the finest soul 'album tracks' ever recorded.
The current line-up of the band - this time with noted US recruits augmenting founder members Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre - continue to record and tour around the world to ongoing critical and audience acclaim.

All this and more is perfectly illustrated in the band's latest release, "AWB R&B", a live CD recorded in Austin,Texas in September of 2015.

Onstage    (0 Votes)
West Coast Swing with Kevin Coleman and the Flat Five each Wednesday at 7:30pm at Onstage

Jazz and Blues arose from common roots in the Black Experience in America. In the middle of the last century Jazz and Blues had a lot in common including musical repertoire and improvisation. For example, repertoire like “Stormy Monday,” “Drifting and Drifting,” and “Parchman Farm.” The music of Kevin Coleman and the Flat Five captures the classic style and repertoire of the West Coast blues and mixes it with improvisation.

Dancers are welcome too as almost all of the West Coast Blues can be danced to using West Coast Swing techniques. Also many of the pieces lend themselves to dancing using East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop.

West Coast blues speaks not only to the Black Experience but to the many of the problems in contemporary America. Like having no job, having no money, going to the pawnshop, and being in jail. Also it specializes in songs about partners who run around, cheat, lie, and break your heart so is a good choice if you have just been dumped. The music has the instrumentation and rhythms that also allow swing dancing.

Kevin Coleman and the Flat Five have been performing each Wednesday from 7:30 to 10 pm at Onstage Bar on Kapahulu for the last seven years. The same musicians have played together for the last six years so the music is tight. There is no Jimi Hendrix or Led Zepplin blues variations. Just the real thing.

The venue is small and is not well kept although the new owners have purchased some tables and painted a wall. The sound system is good and seating limited. It is not a place for fine dresses (other than dance dresses) and certainly not suits. In other words it has the atmosphere of the old roadhouses. ALERT: The air conditioner is working now to cool you down and heated up by Letecia (that is, the Roman goddess of fertility and abundance). Onstage is the perfect place for this music to be played and t
