Tribute to Thelonious Monk: Mike Lewis & Friends

Mike Lewis & Friends pay tribute to the great Thelonious Monk. Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer with a unique improvisational style, who made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire. He is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington, which is particularly remarkable as Ellington composed more than a thousand pieces, whereas Monk wrote about 70.

Tribute to Chet Baker: Mike Lewis & Friends

Mike Lewis & Friends pay tribute to the late, great Chet Baker.

Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s. With a following drawn by his Miles Davis-like style and by his resemblance to James Dean, Mr. Baker won jazz polls in Metronome and Down Beat magazines. Amongst Baker's earliest notable professional gigs were engagements with saxophonist Vido Musso's band, and also with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, though he earned much more renown in 1952 when he was chosen by Charlie Parker to play with him for a series of West Coast engagements. He became an icon of the West Coast "cool school" of jazz, helped by his good looks and singing talent. One of Baker's 1956 recordings, released for the first time in its entirety in 1989 as The Route, with Art Pepper, helped further the West Coast jazz sound and became a staple of cool jazz.
